Convertus AB is a language technology company specialising in machine translation. The company was founded in 2006 as a spin-off from the computational linguistics group at Uppsala University.
Convertus supplies holistic translation solutions, including machine translation, manual post-editing and translation memories, to businesses and public authorities. Convertus’ first major product was a rule-based system for translating course syllabi from Swedish to English. It is currently in use at several major Swedish universities, including Uppsala, Lund, KTH and Gothenburg. Convertus has also created high-quality translation systems between Swedish and English in various other domains, working with clients such as Scania CV AV, Xerox, Hiab and SKB (Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co).
From 2011 until 2013, Convertus was a partner in a major EU-project known as Bologna. During this project, translation systems for course syllabi and study programmes were developed from 8 languages – Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish – into English. The project also led to the development of the Bologna Translation Service (BTS), an integrated platform for translation of whole documents. Since the end of the project, Convertus has maintained development of the Finnish-to-English system, implementing state-of-the art research and working closely in collaboration with a group the University of Tampere to improve translation quality, while also working to upgrade and improve the BTS platform.
