The Bologna project

Convertus has, together with four partners, been granted EU means for expanding the Syllabus Translator to handle translation from Finnish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish and German into English, and from English into Chinese. The Bologna project will run for two years, starting in 2011.

Needs for machine translation and post-editing

The project aims at exploring the market needs for a new machine translation system for translation of English into Swedish, and a product for automatic post-editing of machine translated text that is independent of language and translation system.

In an initial analysis, the most interesting potential clients were identified on the basis of translation volumes and turnover. Language Service Providers, Swedish industrial companies and Swedish governmental institutions were in focus. The initial analysis was based on a previous market study from 99/00, reports and articles published by TAUS (Translation Automation User Society), public translation contracts and established contacts with major Language Service Providers. In a follow-up phase, a number of interesting companies and institutions were selected for personal interviews.

The project was carried out in the spring 2010, and the results indicate an increased interest in machine translation from English to Swedish, and in automatic post-editing. Convertus has now intensified its R&D work in these areas, and initiated partner co-operations.
